Important changes in the two best football tournaments in Vietnam

According to these changes, the 2025-2026 V-League will have 1.5 relegation slots. These 1.5 relegation slots will be the bottom team in the V-League (ranked 14th) that will be relegated directly. The second-to-last team in the rankings (ranked 13th) will have to play a play-off match to retain their position with the second-placed team in the 2025-2026 first division.

On the other hand, the first division this season will have 1.5 promotion slots. The champion of the first division 2025-2026 will be promoted directly to the V-League 2026-2027. The second-placed team in the first division will play a relegation play-off match with the 13th-placed team in the V-League.

This is a major change for the two most important tournaments in the domestic professional football system in the current season. Previously, the V-League was expected to have 2 direct relegation slots, while the first division was expected to have 2 direct promotion slots.

The reason for the above changes is because recently some football teams in the V-League and the first division have encountered financial difficulties, causing fluctuations in the participating teams of these two tournaments.

Before the start of V-League 2025-2026, Quang Nam Football Club withdrew and PVF-CAND Club was promoted from the first division to replace it.

Before the 2025-2026 first division tournament started, Hoa Binh Football Club withdrew and Phu Tho Club was replaced.

Also according to the announcement of VFF, the 2026 national second division football tournament will have 3 promotion slots, joining the 2026-2027 first division tournament.
