Dutch scientists have launched the country's first laboratory tasked with researching how autonomous drones, miniature in size to carry out tasks such as finding gas leaks in factories or participating in search and rescue.
With the Swarming Lab up and running, researchers at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) aim to create around 100 tiny drones that can be sent into the air to carry out missions 24 hours a day. The drones can land on charging stations and take off again to continue flying without human intervention.
Now researchers have developed technology that allows robots to sense each other without outside help. Guido de Croon, director of the Swarming Lab, said scientists are working to develop a “swarm” of flying machines that are both aware of each other’s presence and able to coordinate to complete complex tasks.
