On June 7, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a phone call with European Council President Charles Michel.

A statement from the Turkish President's Office quoted Mr. Erdogan as saying: "It is necessary to increase contacts at all levels, with a specific and positive agenda, towards the goal of Türkiye becoming a full member of the EU."

According to the leader, Brussels' "supportive stance and fair treatment" towards Ankara's EU accession efforts will open new horizons for bilateral relations.

During the phone call, President Erdogan also stressed the importance of upgrading the customs union agreement between Ankara and Brussels, ensuring visa-free travel for Turkish citizens in the EU and strengthening bilateral cooperation on migration management and counter-terrorism.

Turkey began negotiations to join the EU in 2005. However, the process stalled for several years after a prolonged state of emergency was declared by President Erdogan following a failed coup against his government in 2016.
