According to Comic Book , according to Xbox, a new Call of Duty title will launch this October, maintaining the annual tradition of the long-running shooter franchise.
Call of Duty is a franchise that has had its ups and downs, but has consistently released a new game every fall for the past 20 years. Some might argue that the annual release has sometimes taken a toll on quality, like the recent release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which was criticized for its launch map being a remaster of 2009's Modern Warfare 2. However, the game still ranks second on the year's best-selling list in the US, although that's a slight decline compared to past years.
Despite that, Call of Duty is likely to continue its steady rollout with a new game from developer Treyarch in October this year. According to Inverse, Xbox chief Phil Spencer told employees in a recent meeting that a new Call of Duty game is slated for release in October.
New Call of Duty could be released in October this year
This will be the first Call of Duty game officially developed under Microsoft, so the company has more flexibility to delay the game if necessary. Even though Microsoft just paid $68 billion for Activision, they probably won't miss out on the opportunity to make money if they can take advantage of it.
This year's game is expected to be a new Black Ops installment, reportedly called Black Ops Gulf War . The game is set in the 90s and features the return of characters from the Black Ops series .
Call of Duty typically launches in November, but some versions have been released a month earlier, so this game could be released around the end of October. It's unclear if Microsoft is trying to avoid overlapping with another game slated for November.
