Unfavorable weather, scarcity of durian in the West causes prices to skyrocket

Currently, many durian purchasing warehouses in Tien Giang province are offering prices of 195,000 VND/kg for Monthong durian (Thai) and 140,000 VND/kg for Ri 6 durian, but there is no product to buy.

On November 9, many companies and durian purchasing warehouses in Tien Giang province simultaneously announced the purchase price of Thai durian type A (2.7 compartments, from 1.9 - 5kg) at 190,000 - 195,000 VND; type B is priced at 170,000 - 175,000 VND/kg (2.5 compartments, from 1.7 - 5.6 kg). Ri 6 durian type A is priced at 130,000 - 140,000 VND/kg (2.7 compartments, from 1.9 - 5kg), type B is priced at about 115,000 VND/kg (2.5 compartments, from 1.7 - 5.5kg).

In addition, durian purchasing companies and warehouses also attach the condition of "cash" to attract traders to buy more goods. However, a representative of a warehouse specializing in purchasing durian in Cai Be district (Tien Giang province) said that the goods are currently very scarce, if in the past they could buy hundreds of tons, now they can only buy about a few dozen tons per day.

Mr. Huynh Tan Loc - head of Ngu Hiep Durian Cooperative (Cai Lay district, Tien Giang province) - said that durian prices are currently very high but durian output is not much.

The reason is that this year's unfavorable weather caused many durian trees to drop fruit, resulting in low fruit yield, especially in long-standing durian gardens.

Meanwhile, members of Phu Quy Agricultural Cooperative (Phu Quy commune, Cai Lay town, Tien Giang province) are entering the beginning of the durian harvest season.

Currently, traders buy beautiful Ri 6 durian at the garden for 135,000 - 140,000 VND/kg, Thai durian over 160,000 VND/kg.

The leader of Phu Quy Agricultural Cooperative also informed that this year, out of 10 gardens that processed durians that flowered in the off-season, only about 3 gardens were successful. Similarly, due to the scarcity of goods, durian prices in Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre province are also being sought after by traders, who are purchasing them at similar prices to those in Tien Giang.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, by the end of 2023, the province's durian area will be about 21,790 hectares.
