The video was doctored to make viewers believe that Mr. Li was talking about a new investment platform backed by the government and helmed by American billionaire Elon Musk.

In a Facebook post on December 29, Prime Minister Lee warned that scammers were using artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic voices and images, and that Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong was also being targeted.

According to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the scammers "have turned our real images from official events into fake images that look very convincing, but are completely fake videos in which we say things that we never actually said."

"If you see or receive fraudulent videos promising guaranteed investment returns or gifts, please do not respond to them," PM Lee wrote.

The leader also advised Singaporeans to report scams and fake news to the government's official anti-scam app.

Mr. Ly has previously published many articles about the dangers of AI, in which he once admitted that it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between truth and falsehood from what humans see or hear, as AI becomes more and more sophisticated.

In a post in July, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said scammers often took advantage of his high media profile to launch cryptocurrency scams and fake ads.
