Technology group Nvidia has just announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, to build advanced AI infrastructure to train and operate new generation artificial intelligence models.
This huge investment is expected to boost the development of artificial super intelligence (AGI) – an AI tool capable of performing many different tasks simultaneously.

“Nvidia and OpenAI have been pushing each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the ChatGPT breakthrough. This investment and partnership marks the next big step forward for both parties,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.
Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, said: “We have worked closely with Nvidia since the early days of OpenAI. We have used their platform to create AI systems that hundreds of millions of people use every day. We are excited to continue working with Nvidia to push the frontiers of artificial intelligence and bring the benefits of this technology to everyone.”
The partnership is expected to close in the coming weeks, making Nvidia the largest investor in OpenAI, surpassing Microsoft, which has invested a total of $13 billion in OpenAI since 2019 in exchange for early integration of OpenAI technology into its products and is negotiating a 49% stake in future profits.
With more than 700 million active weekly users and expected to continue to grow strongly, the investment from Nvidia will help OpenAI expand its operational capacity and have more economic potential to develop new generation AI platforms.
The race to develop AI tools is fierce globally. Besides OpenAI and ChatGPT, Google is investing heavily in Gemini, Meta is deeply integrating AI into social networks, and Chinese technology companies such as Alibaba, DeepSeek, and ByteDance are also constantly launching new AI platforms.
Market analysts say the $100 billion deal from Nvidia will help OpenAI accelerate the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI).
AGI is considered the destination of AI systems, capable of performing any task requiring intelligence that humans can do. Unlike narrow AI that only performs specific tasks, AGI has the ability to learn, reason and apply knowledge flexibly in many fields.
Will this historic investment help Nvidia and OpenAI create the world's first AGI system? Time will tell.
