Regarding the case of a girl named LNP (nearly 20 years old, from Ca Mau) who had a tragic work accident while pregnant with twins, and had her severed arm temporarily grafted onto her leg by doctors at Binh Duong General Hospital (HCMC) to preserve the patient's hope of becoming a mother, on September 26, a member of the surgical team said that the patient is currently conscious and able to eat and drink.

The surgical wounds on the patient’s hands were dry and warm pink. With the twin pregnancy in the patient’s womb, through ultrasound and examination results, the doctors recorded that the health of the two babies was still stable.

Talking to reporters from her hospital bed, the girl named P. kept smiling optimistically. The pregnant woman said that the accident happened so quickly that she fainted before she could regain her composure.

When he woke up, P. was extremely worried to find himself in the recovery room, with his hand… lying under his feet, while his forearm was stuck in his stomach.

“When I saw the hand under my foot, I was very scared. The doctor had to come and explain right away that it was to temporarily preserve the hand until the day it could be reattached, which would help me and my baby. Hearing that, I gradually calmed down and felt happy.

Finding out that my arm was crushed was a huge shock to me. But what I was most worried about was not my arm, but my children, I was afraid of losing them. Thanks to the medical team, I still have a chance to get my arm back intact and save my children.

My two babies are over 24 weeks old. Every time I feel my babies kicking or having contractions, I am very happy because I know they are still alive.

My child and mother are the motivation for me to get through this time. I know I have to try to cheer up, because even if I cry, things will not go back to the way they were before. I wish that in two months I will see my child. At that time, they will transplant as many arms as they want. I will smile until my child is born,” the girl emotionally shared.

Ready for the future as both father and mother to children

According to the female patient, she is currently only afraid that she will not be able to hold her children because she does not have enough arms, which will cause the children to lack many things in the future. Because she will face a life of raising children alone, taking on the responsibility of being both father and mother when the twins are born.

“I would be very happy to hold my baby, bathe, feed, and dress him with my own hands. But it might take a long time before I can do that completely…”, P. pondered.

The patient received first aid at a medical facility in Thuan An ward (HCMC), then was urgently transferred to Binh Duong General Hospital the same afternoon.

Here, the female patient was noted to be in no shock, 23 weeks pregnant with twins, and had a severed limb. In response to the girl's wish to keep her hand to care for her future children, the doctors boldly performed a temporary surgery to graft the severed limb onto her leg. The surgery lasted 3 hours.

After the surgery, the mother and her two unborn children are safe, and the temporary hand grafted to the leg is stable. It is expected that when the fetus is large enough (reaching 32 weeks), the doctors will consider reattaching the patient's hand.
