Godmother's love

Implementing the “Godmother” program, the provincial women’s unions at all levels have carried out many specific, practical and meaningful activities. These activities ease the pain of loss, become a solid support, and help orphans have more motivation and conditions to move forward in the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has left serious consequences, especially for children. Many children have become orphans, suffering the irreparable pain of losing loved ones. For children in difficult circumstances, when they lose the breadwinner of their family, their lives become even more precarious, their future becomes uncertain. More than ever, they need care and support. In this context, the "Godmother" program was born as a lifebuoy full of humanity. The program was launched by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union. Initially, the program only aimed to support orphans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, during the review process, it was found that there were still many orphans in need of help, and many localities proactively expanded the scope of support.

According to the Provincial Women's Union, in recent times, all levels of the provincial Women's Union have performed well in connecting and sponsoring orphans, especially those who lost their parents due to COVID-19. The provincial Women's Union has mobilized benefactors to act as a bridge for activities to care for orphans. At the same time, it has promoted propaganda about the program on electronic information channels and social networks to spread widely to the community.

At the age of "not yet full, not yet worried", losing a loved one, the children not only suffer extreme pain but also face many difficulties in life. Nguyen Thi Nhu Y (born in 2012), residing in Vinh Hoa commune, lost her mother due to COVID-19. Y lives with her aunt, Mrs. Tran Thi Lieu, an elderly single woman with no stable income. The life of the two aunts and nieces is extremely difficult. In 2021, Nhu Y received support from a benefactor of 500,000 VND or more/quarter. The Women's Union of Vinh Hoa commune supported 300,000 VND/quarter. Thanks to that help, Y has more motivation to continue going to school, nurturing her dream. "Thanks to the care and support of the aunts and uncles, I have the conditions to continue going to school. I am very grateful, I will try to study well to not let the aunts and uncles down", Nhu Y shared.

For Vo Van Hoa (born in 2015), residing in Thanh Dong commune, the commune Women's Union officials are his second mothers. After his mother passed away, Hoa was adopted by his aunt. However, his aunt's family is also in difficult circumstances. Luckily, he was adopted by the commune Women's Union and a unit until he turned 18. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyen - Hoa's aunt said: "If it weren't for the help of the commune women's union officials and benefactors, my family wouldn't know how to manage. Thanks to that support, we have had some relief. I always encourage him to try hard to study, remind him to listen to his teachers, and focus on his studies."

Danh Thao Nguyen, residing in Go Quao commune, is one of the orphans with especially difficult circumstances who are adopted by the “mothers” who are officers of the Provincial Police Women’s Union. Her mother passed away and her father went to work far away. Thao Nguyen’s childhood was closely tied to the love of her aunt, Mrs. Thi Dang, and her uncle, Nguyen Van Du. The family had no land, so Mr. Du had to drive a motorbike taxi to take care of the whole family.

Thanks to the connection of local women's cadres, Nguyen received support of 500,000 VND/month from the Provincial Police Women's Union officers until 2026. It was the timely support of the "godmothers" that gave her strength on her journey towards the future.

According to the Provincial Police Women's Association, the implementation of the "Godmother" program has received support and appreciation from the Party Committee and the Provincial Police Board of Directors. To date, the association has sponsored 22 orphans due to COVID-19 and children in difficult circumstances. All funding is contributed by officers, members of the Provincial Police and benefactors.

Not only connecting organizations and individuals to mobilize resources to support orphans, the “Godmother” program also seeks “godmothers” to directly care for the health, provide spiritual and financial support for children up to 18 years old in many flexible ways. In addition, women’s unions at all levels also support knowledge, life skills, health and psychological counseling, contributing to helping children overcome adversity and firmly step on the journey to adulthood.
