Michigan Supreme Court blocks effort to remove Trump from ballot

The Michigan Supreme Court rejected an attempt to remove Mr Trump's name from the state's primary ballot, after a group of voters requested it because of the former president's alleged involvement in the Capitol Hill riot.

A group of Michigan voters appealed this month after a state appeals court ruled that "even if the 14th Amendment finds Donald Trump ineligible to hold the office of president, the Secretary of State does not have the authority to remove him from the ballot."

The Michigan Supreme Court, controlled by Democrats, on December 27 rejected the appeal of the above voters and upheld the appeals court's decision. This means that former US President Trump's name will still appear on the Michigan primary ballot.

Michigan is one of the battleground states that could decide the outcome of the general election in November 2024.

The decision from the Michigan Supreme Court gives Mr. Trump a legal victory as the former president's legal team seeks to block lawsuits to remove his name from the state's primary ballot.

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits individuals from holding public office if they have participated in "insurrection or rebellion" after taking an oath to support and defend the US Constitution.

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled on December 19 to remove Trump's name from the state's primary ballot, and the former president said he would appeal to the US Supreme Court. Mr. Trump also faces similar lawsuits in Arizona and Minnesota.
