UNESCO made the recommendation after the British government last July approved a £1.7 billion ($2.2 billion) project to build a tunnel near a world heritage site in the southwest of the country, despite efforts by campaigners to block it.

Since 2017, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee has also made several recommendations to the British Government on this project.

Experts have warned of "permanent, irreparable damage" to the area if the tunnel is built.

However, the UK government has stressed the tunnel's role in easing congestion on the main route to the south-west of England, which is particularly busy during the peak holiday period.

According to UNESCO, the agency's recommendation to put Stonehenge on the list of heritage in danger "aims to mobilize international support".

The recommendation will have to be voted on by member states of the World Heritage Committee at its meeting in New Delhi next July and is likely to be adopted.

Stonehenge has been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site since 1986. Built in several stages between 3,000 and 2,300 BC, Stonehenge is one of the most important prehistoric megalithic monuments in the world for its scale, sophisticated layout and architectural precision.

Stonehenge is a group of large stone columns arranged in a circle and is known as the "giant stone battlement".

UNESCO's inclusion of Stonehenge on the world heritage list comes with efforts to preserve the site's values.

In 2021, UNESCO removed the port city of Liverpool in Northwest England from its list of world heritage sites, after the organization's experts concluded that new real estate developments in the port city were causing too much damage to the integrity of the heritage.

A conservation project at the Stonehenge megalithic monument near Amesbury in England began on September 14 to repair cracks and holes, the British charity English Heritage said.
