This is thanks to the strong resonance of traditional Chinese culture with the increased consumer demand in the domestic market after a period affected by the Covid-19 epidemic.
Data from e-commerce platform JD shows that searches for dragon-related items online have surpassed 23 million since the beginning of the year, with the most sought-after items being Maotai liquor, commemorative coins and dragon-themed costumes.
The platform said that since the Tet promotion campaign kicked off on January 17, the transaction volume of dragon-themed items has skyrocketed 10 times compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, shopping site Taobao said that red envelopes, refrigerator magnets, and phone cases printed with dragons are popular items in the country of one billion people.
According to East Asian culture, the dragon is the 5th animal in the 12-year zodiac, considered a symbol of luck, strength and fortune. Therefore, consumers prefer dragon-themed items to express a wish for a better life in the New Year.
