Prospects from the first mud-free eel farming model in Thuong Duc commune

(Baohatinh.vn) - From a bold choice and methodical investment, the mud-free eel farming model of Ms. Phan Thi Hoai Thuong (Thuong Duc commune, Ha Tinh) has initially shown effectiveness, promising to bring high economic value.

From her concern about an effective agricultural production model, Ms. Phan Thi Hoai Thuong boldly tried her hand at the mud-free eel farming model. In August 2024, she started implementing the model with a scale of 35,000 fry/10 farming tanks. This is also a completely new direction in the countryside of Thuong Duc.

To realize the idea, she invested thoroughly from selecting breeds, building breeding tanks, installing water supply systems to preparing food sources... with a total cost of more than 600 million VND. Before starting, she spent time learning about the model from many sources such as: visiting households in and outside the province, learning experiences on social networks and participating in training courses on livestock farming techniques.

Thanks to following the correct farming process and techniques, Ms. Thuong's family's eel tanks grow quickly.

“Previously, my family was only familiar with traditional farming models, never approached the mud-free eel farming method, so when we started, everything was almost new. But I determined that if I wanted to do it, I had to be diligent in learning and observing every detail in the farming process. Sometimes just a small change in water temperature or diet can affect the eel's development. Therefore, I always try to spend a lot of time in the farming area, recording any abnormalities to promptly adjust,” said Ms. Thuong.

To make eels grow quickly, evenly, and with few diseases, the selection of breeds and feeding ration are key factors. Her family prioritizes choosing healthy, uniform eels, feeding them industrial feed combined with minced trash fish and adding probiotics to help the eel's intestines develop stably. "When the eels are small, feed them 2-3 times a day, when they are big, reduce to 1-2 times a day. We have to observe regularly, and if we see any unusual signs, we will handle them immediately" - Ms. Thuong shared.

After 10 months of care, Ms. Thuong's family's commercial eels are about 150 - 200 grams each.

According to Ms. Thuong, one of the big advantages of this model is the ease of controlling the farming environment. Eels are raised in mud-free cement tanks, with an artificial substrate system for shelter. Thanks to that, feeding, water changes, and disease treatment are all proactive, clean, and less labor-intensive than traditional pond farming. In particular, wastewater from the tank is used to water plants, which is both economical and environmentally friendly.

After 10 months of care, the eels have now reached an average weight of about 150 - 200 grams each. It is expected that by September, she will sell the entire first batch with a total output of about more than 6 tons. Currently, the family is only retailing a small portion at prices ranging from 150,000 - 160,000 VND/kg, the rest is being ordered by local traders to supply to restaurants and eateries.

Although it is only the first crop, Ms. Phan Thi Hoai Thuong's mud-free eel farming model has shown economic prospects. With promising profits, she plans to expand the scale next year, invest in more tanks and increase the number of breeds to increase output. More importantly, this model opens up a new option for farmers who want to start a business on their homeland.

With her boldness and daring to think and act, Ms. Thuong not only initially found a direction for sustainable economic development for her family but also contributed to enriching the agricultural picture of Thuong Duc commune.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son - Chairman of Thuong Duc Commune People's Committee said: "Ms. Thuong's family's mud-free eel farming model is a pioneer model in the area, opening up a new direction full of potential for the long-term development of the locality. We will continue to monitor and evaluate carefully to be able to replicate in the future. In addition, the locality will create all favorable conditions, support consumption connections and provide technical guidance if the family needs to expand the scale."
