The New York Post reported on February 5 that Pennsylvania state police are searching for thieves who stole 100,000 organic eggs worth about $40,000 (VND1 billion), amid soaring egg prices in the US.

Police say thieves broke into a Pete & Gerry's Organics delivery truck in Greencastle on the evening of February 1.

"Pete & Gerry's Organics is aware of the recent incident in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and we are actively working with local law enforcement to investigate," the company said in a statement.

"We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible. As the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to comment further on this matter," the statement said.

Pennsylvania State Police have not provided any other details.

The theft comes as egg prices continue to soar in the United States, with the national average price for 12 eggs reaching $4.15 by December 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture , which warned that prices could rise another 20% this year.

Economists and agricultural experts say the price hikes are due to the impact of the bird flu outbreak, which has forced farmers to cull millions of chickens each month.

More than 145 million chickens, turkeys and other poultry have been culled since the outbreak began in 2022, the vast majority of them egg-laying hens, US officials say.

The ongoing outbreak has caused Americans to spend twice as much on eggs as they did two years ago, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down.
