OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has reached a valuation of $500 billion, following a deal in which current and former employees of the company sold about $6.6 billion in shares, a source said on October 2.
This is up from a previous valuation of $300 billion, highlighting OpenAI's rapid growth in both user numbers and revenue.
In the deal, OpenAI employees sold shares to a group of investors, including Thrive Capital, SoftBank, Dragoneer Investment Group, Abu Dhabi's MGX and T. Rowe Price.
The company has authorized the sale of more than $10 billion in shares on the secondary market, the source added.
The share sale adds to SoftBank's previous investment in OpenAI's $40 billion funding round.
The company generated about $4.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2025, up about 16% from last year's total, according to The Information.
The deal comes as major tech companies compete fiercely to attract AI talent with huge compensation packages.
Notably, the “giant” Meta is investing billions of dollars in Scale AI and has successfully lured 28-year-old “star” Alexandr Wang to run their super intelligence unit./.
