Growing black termite mushrooms using high-tech model

Growing black termite mushrooms is quite easy to care for and provides a steady income.

When it comes to termite mushrooms, many people often think of the product of the rainy season. But that is white termite mushrooms, which can only grow in nature. As for black termite mushrooms, with nutritional content not inferior to white termite mushrooms, there are now many successful growing models thanks to the application of high technology.

Black termite mushrooms grow best in temperatures of about 26-28 degrees Celsius and humidity above 85%. To maintain this environment, it is necessary to build a growing house with a temperature control system and automatic misting. Master the growing techniques from selecting the spawn to caring for and harvesting the mushrooms to achieve the highest yield.

In Vinh Thuan Dong commune, Can Tho city, Mr. Dao Van Khoi was the first household to grow this type of mushroom. In 2024, with the guidance and support of technical staff of the Hau Giang High-Tech Agricultural Zone Management Board (Management Board), he boldly built a greenhouse and imported 4,000 mushroom spawns for experimental planting. After 2 crops, he harvested about 700 kg of mushrooms, with a selling price of 160,000 VND/kg, initially bringing in a good profit.

The first black termite mushroom growing model was deployed by the Management Board at the Hau Giang High-Tech Agricultural Zone in 2022. Through the trial plantings, the model management board has summarized many techniques and experiences to grow mushrooms with high productivity and quality, ready to transfer to people in the city.

Most recently, Ms. Nguyen Thi Muoi in Hamlet 8, Vi Thuy Commune, Can Tho City, has coordinated with the Management Board to deploy a high-tech black termite mushroom growing model. Taking advantage of the vacant land behind her house, she invested in a greenhouse and imported 2,000 mushroom spawns to grow. Initially, the mushroom spawns grew well.

Mrs. Muoi shared: “I really like black termite mushrooms so I want to grow them to have clean mushrooms for my family to eat and sell for extra income. Since the beginning of planting, I have prepared the output for the product by contacting units in need, and as for the technique, I am quite confident thanks to the dedicated guidance from the technical staff of the Management Board.”

Engineer Do Thi Bao Ngoc, Specialist of the Planning - Technical Department of the Hau Giang High-Tech Agricultural Zone Management Board, said: “Black termite mushrooms are grown 25-30 days after being placed in the substrate. After planting, they can be harvested for 120 days, with a yield of about 200 grams/spawn. To create a stable output for the product, in addition to selling fresh mushrooms, we also coordinate research on processed mushroom products such as freeze-dried black termite mushrooms and termite mushroom crackers. Due to high demand, but small planting areas, supply often cannot meet demand.”

According to Engineer Ngoc, growing black termite mushrooms does not require a large area and is easy to care for, so it is quite suitable for modern agriculture. This model is not only developed in rural areas but can be replicated in urban areas, because black termite mushrooms bring high economic value, creating a stable source of income for people.
