China's Ministry of Commerce expressed concern on July 25 about protectionist measures the European Union (EU) has planned to impose on its biofuel industry, warning that such measures would be counterproductive.
Speaking at a regular press conference in Beijing, ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian stressed that the EU's imposition of tariffs on Chinese biofuels will only increase product costs, undermine the interests of EU industries and consumers, and hinder the EU's green transformation efforts, as well as China-EU economic and trade cooperation.
The spokesman stressed that China supports the prudent use of trade remedies and urged the EU to avoid indiscriminate protectionist policies, calling for resolving the issue through dialogue and consultation.
The statement was made after the EU Biofuels Commission announced on July 19 that the European Commission (EC) will temporarily apply anti-dumping taxes of 12.8-36.4% on biofuel imported from China within the next four weeks.
The EU, the world's largest biofuel market, imports biofuels from China to meet its significant consumption needs, helping to achieve its green transition and energy saving goals.
