China "accuses" the US of not complying with WTO regulations, emphasizing one thing about chip exports

On January 9, Insidetrade reported that China believes that the US does not comply with many regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

A day earlier (January 8), the Chinese government said US export controls on semiconductors and sanctions on Chinese telecommunications companies violated some WTO principles.

At a press conference the same day, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning emphasized: "Washington is strengthening control over chip exports to Beijing for national security reasons."

Accordingly, the US control measures violate the WTO's most-favored-nation principle as stated in Article I of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

Mao Ning said that US export control measures go far beyond national security protection measures.

In October 2022, President Joe Biden's administration imposed expanded export controls on advanced semiconductor and semiconductor manufacturing equipment to block Beijing's access to these materials.

The US Commerce Department said export controls are necessary for national security.

The controls have prompted US semiconductor maker Nvidia to stop supplying its RTX 4090 graphics card in China and has released a slower version of the graphics card for the billion-people market.
