On September 29, China officially operated the CHIEF1300 centrifuge with the largest capacity in the world .
The device is capable of generating centrifugal force 300 times greater than Earth's gravity for loads up to 20 tons.
CHIEF1300 is one of the core parts of the Centrifugal Supergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Complex (CHIEF), a facility under construction in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province, eastern China.
With its outstanding advantages, CHIEF1300 will serve cutting-edge scientific research in many fields, including deep-sea and underground resource exploitation, disaster response and prevention, underground waste treatment and synthesis of new materials.
A centrifuge is a device used to separate components in a mixture based on differences in density.
By spinning the sample at high speed, the centrifuge creates a large centrifugal force that acts on the components in the sample. This force causes the heavier components to move away from the axis of rotation and settle to the bottom, while the lighter components remain on top or closer to the axis of rotation.
