After more than five years of disruption due to border tensions and the COVID-19 pandemic, India and China will officially resume direct commercial flights this October, marking a cautious step in improving bilateral relations.

According to a VNA reporter in New Delhi, the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that direct flights between several major cities of the two countries will be restored.

IndiGo, India's largest airline, announced it will launch daily flights from Kolkata to Guangzhou from October 26, and plans to open another route from New Delhi to a major Chinese city in the near future.

This is the first time since 2020 that the world's two most populous countries have resumed direct flights, despite China remaining India's largest trading partner throughout the tensions.

The move comes just a month after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China – his first in seven years – to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, where Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to boost economic ties and maintain peace in the disputed border area.

A serious clash in 2020 at the Himalayan border had caused relations between the two countries to plummet, leading to the suspension of all direct flights between the two countries and a prolonged deadlock./.
