Billionaire Elon Musk on late August 12 harshly criticized Apple Inc.'s App Store operations, accusing the iPhone maker of favoring OpenAI, the company that developed the popular ChatGPT chatbot.
The billionaire founder of xAI Holdings, which owns AI model development team Grok and social network X, said Apple has made it impossible for anyone other than OpenAI to reach the top spot on the App Store rankings, a position sought after by global app developers.
In a post on his X account, Mr Musk questioned whether Apple was “playing politics ” by not giving his products a prominent place in the group.
The comments mark the biggest confrontation Mr Musk has sparked since his confrontation with US President Donald Trump in June 2025.
Mr Musk added that xAI would take legal action against what he said were antitrust violations.
Apple and OpenAI have an AI partnership built into the latest iPhone models.
ChatGPT is now the most downloaded free iPhone app in the US, surpassing Grok in 5th place.
In response to the allegations, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman turned his attacks on Musk's management of X, suggesting he was using the social network for personal gain while OpenAI would only "focus on building great products."
In a separate statement later, Apple said the App Store "is designed to be fair and unbiased."
Apple recommends thousands of apps through rankings, algorithmic recommendations, and expert-curated lists based on objective criteria, a spokesperson said.
The person added that Apple's goal is to provide a safe discovery experience for users, along with valuable opportunities for app developers, and to partner with many other parties so that apps can stand out in rapidly growing categories./.
