People's Hospital 115 has successfully applied the electrophysiological monitoring system in neurosurgery on 2 patients with the support of Dr. Gulaev Evgeny, Ivanovo Neurological Institute (Russian Federation).
The first case is a female patient (62 years old, residing in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) who has had hemifacial spasms for 8 years, and has been treated with many methods but without success. At People's Hospital 115, the patient was successfully operated on for hemifacial spasms with the support of electrophysiology during surgery. Immediately after regaining consciousness, the left hemifacial spasms completely disappeared, and there were no complications after surgery.
The second case is a male patient (63 years old, living in Dong Nai province), who 2 years ago underwent spinal screw surgery to treat multi-level spinal stenosis from the lumbar spine L3 to the sacrum S1 at the front line. Doctors performed the surgery using Neuronavigation Brain Lab combined with electrophysiological stimulation during the surgery. Immediately after surgery, the patient had a significant improvement in the feeling of pain, numbness and tingling in both legs, was able to walk and continued with additional physical therapy.
According to Dr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, People's Hospital 115, the technique of monitoring neurophysiology during surgery is widely used in the world , but is not yet popular in Vietnam.
This new technique helps protect patients from nerve damage, reduces the risk of complications during surgery and improves post-operative outcomes thanks to the ability to completely control the central and peripheral nervous systems during surgery.
