Why does lightning not affect planes in flight?

According to world statistics, on average, every 3,000 flight hours, each plane will be struck by lightning once. Lightning often strikes planes with engines located at the rear (this type is increasingly rare). However, if struck by lightning in the air, the lightning will not affect the plane while in flight.

Due to its special structure, lightning does not affect the operation of the aircraft.

Lightning does not affect planes in flight.

According to a spokesman around the world, it is normal for planes to be struck by lightning while flying in the air. But how they can survive such a powerful electric shock of billions of joules, equivalent to a quarter of a ton of TNT, is something that many people find difficult to understand.

"The outer shell of the cabin and interior of an aircraft is designed to conduct electricity but also to isolate the current from the crew, passengers and many other electronic devices located inside," said Chris Hammond, member of the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa).

Lightning bolts produce very strong electric currents.

At the same time, Mr. Chris Hammond also added: "Inside the aircraft shell there is a metal mesh. This is a fine steel mesh, which prevents the external current from going deep inside and makes them move in the opposite direction."

In addition, the fuselage is designed with many additional layers of shielding to protect the vehicle from the risk of electrical short circuits caused by external impacts. All parts of the aircraft are carefully inspected before being put into operation.

Things to note when flying

Passengers who have purchased domestic flight tickets need to prepare the following documents: Identity card, citizen identification card; Identification card, certification of the armed forces. For international flights, passengers need to prepare: Passport, visa and documents required by the destination country.

At the same time, passengers must be present at the boarding gate about 20 - 30 minutes to board the plane. This is also the time for staff to check and notify passengers who are not present at the boarding gate. The boarding gate will usually be announced to you after check-in.

When flying, passengers should pay attention to be present at the airport early and prepare all documents.

People with a history of sinusitis are easily affected by changes in airplane pressure, especially during takeoff and landing. Therefore, passengers should use nasal spray 2 hours before takeoff. Also, always carry the medicine with you, in case you need to use it.

The pressure on the plane will saturate the amount of oxygen in the air. The humidity in the cabin at this time drops low, causing bronchial dryness, which is the main cause of asthma attacks that you experience when flying. Therefore, you should do some light exercise before take-off, maybe walk around the airport.
