VTC NewsVTC News15/01/2025

This is the 7th emperor of the Tran dynasty, famous for his gambling and often neglected government affairs.

The person mentioned is King Tran Du Tong (1336 - 1369), whose real name is Tran Hao. He is the 10th son of Tran Minh Tong, the 7th emperor of the Tran Dynasty. When he was only 5 years old, Tran Hao was appointed as the successor, and became king at the age of 6.

During his early years as king, thanks to the guidance of the retired emperor Tran Minh Tong, Tran Du Tong was a talented and intelligent king who did many beneficial things for the country, but later became increasingly lazy in politics, only interested in enjoying life.

According to Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu, one summer night, June of the year Binh Ngo (1366), the king took a small boat to visit Lieutenant Tran Ngo Lang's house in Me So village, and returned at the third watch. When he reached Chu Gia river (a river section at Chu Xa beach, Khoai Chau, Hung Yen ), his seal and precious sword were stolen.

Although the Tran Dynasty's laws dealt with gambling very severely, Tran Du Tong still organized gambling right in the palace. The king was so indulgent that contemporary historians commented that "the northern king was not as indulgent".

Being addicted to alcohol, King Tran Du Tong ordered to find someone who was good at drinking and brought them to the palace for everyone to drink together, whoever won would be rewarded, and let officials compete with each other with alcohol, whoever won would be promoted. Many people took advantage of this opportunity to get promoted.

Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu recorded the event "in the summer, the 4th month, called the Vinh An Palace's Chief of Staff Bui Khoan to drink wine together. Khoan pretended to drink 100 liters of wine, and was awarded the title of 24 (promoted 2 ranks)."

At that time, the country was suffering from continuous drought and crop failures, causing famine. However, the king allowed the rich to give rice to the people and then awarded them titles and titles, but did not take any measures to build dikes or develop irrigation systems. The people became more and more miserable, and chaos arose everywhere.

Because of his debauchery, King Tran Du Tong's health gradually deteriorated. He died in the year of Ky Dau 1369, at the age of 33, after a total of 28 years on the throne.

The period of King Tran Du Tong also marked the decline of the Tran Dynasty, after which the Tran Dynasty gradually weakened and fell into the hands of the Ho Dynasty just a few kings later.
