This year's ASEAN Maritime Conference is led by the Vietnam Maritime Administration and hosted by the ASEAN rotation mechanism in Ho Chi Minh City. The conference focuses on new initiatives in the recovery and sustainable development of the maritime transport sector after the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the same time, the progress of implementing the 2022-2023 action plan on cargo circulation and ship waste management was discussed.

Some participating countries also put forward many initiatives in applying smart technology in the fields of transportation and maritime activities.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Le Do Muoi - Director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration - expressed his hope that ASEAN countries will continue to cooperate together, creating a premise for the world maritime industry.

Mr. Muoi affirmed that Vietnam is a country with great potential for maritime transport , the maritime sector plays an essential role in the process of national socio-economic development. The whole country has 34 seaports, 296 wharves that can handle about 750 million tons of goods per year (of which the volume of goods passing through Vietnam's seaports in 2022 will reach 724 million tons, container cargo will reach 24.7 million Teus).

"As a member of ASEAN, we hope to continue to work with other countries to find solutions to enhance connectivity of high-quality maritime transport modes. Through the conference, countries look towards a new technological future for greener, more environmentally friendly maritime transport," Mr. Muoi emphasized.
