Over the past 5 years, with the continuous efforts of the cultural sector, artisans, designers, and the ao dai-loving community, Hue has succeeded in preserving and promoting the precious values of Hue ao dai.

That achievement was rewarded when "Knowledge of sewing and wearing Hue Ao Dai" was officially recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Mr. Phan Thanh Hai, Member of the National Cultural Heritage Council, Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Thua Thien Hue province, emphasized: “This is a clear demonstration of the strong vitality and traditional cultural value of Hue ao dai. The registration is not only an honor but also creates a valuable opportunity to promote and preserve Hue ao dai nationwide and internationally.”

Initially, the proposed title was “Ao Dai Tailoring Profession and Traditional Ao Dai Wearing Practices in Hue”. However, in the final decision, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism chose the name “Knowledge of Tailoring and Wearing Hue Ao Dai”.

This change not only has profound meaning but also more clearly demonstrates the cultural value that Hue Ao Dai represents: it is a delicate combination of tailoring techniques and the unique habits and style of wearing Ao Dai of Hue people.

The registration of Hue Ao Dai is not only a title, but also a milestone that opens up many development opportunities for the locality. Mr. Hai said that the strategy to promote and preserve Hue Ao Dai will be further promoted, with practical programs and activities within the framework of the project "Hue - Capital of Ao Dai".

Artisans and businesses related to the garment industry are also encouraged and motivated to develop, build brands and contribute to bringing Hue Ao Dai further on the world cultural map.

“We believe that with the cooperation of the community and support from all levels and sectors, Hue Ao Dai will not only develop strongly in the country but will also soon be recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity,” Mr. Hai shared.

The role of the community in preserving and promoting heritage

Mr. Hai also emphasized the importance of the community in preserving and promoting the value of Hue ao dai.

For this heritage to truly spread in life, the community that holds the heritage needs to be aware of its role and actively participate in conservation and dissemination activities. This is the core element for Hue Ao Dai to not only be a heritage, but also a living cultural symbol, closely associated with modern life.

The registration of “Hue Ao Dai Tailoring and Wearing Knowledge” is an opportunity for Hue to affirm its role as a cultural center, the cradle of traditional Vietnamese Ao Dai, and at the same time open up a bright future for the local cultural industry.
