Forever proud to be a reporter of Hanoi Moi Newspaper

Exactly 20 years ago, when I had just left university, I was lucky to pass 3 rounds of rigorous exams and became a reporter for Hanoi Moi Newspaper - the newspaper honored to be named twice by President Ho Chi Minh .
Although journalism is hard work, working regardless of hours, it also brings joy when one's writings reach readers, especially readers in the capital, who always love, stick with and trust the Hanoi Moi Newspaper.

In my 20 years of working, I have been fortunate to visit every corner of the country, from Ca Mau Cape to the sacred islands of the country. I was also extremely honored and proud to attend the flag-raising ceremony on Lung Cu peak, to feel the sacredness when watching the Vietnamese national flag fluttering at the northernmost point of the country.

Journalism has also given me the opportunity to feel the love and affection of my colleagues at the Central and City press agencies, and the grassroots cadres for the Hanoi Moi Newspaper. In order to have news and articles that meet the increasingly high demands of the Hanoi Moi Newspaper in the current period, in my 20-year career, I have always received the love and help of my colleagues and grassroots cadres. This is a great motivation, urging me to strive harder to be able to contribute a small part to the development of the Hanoi Moi Newspaper.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, I had the opportunity to visit the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School with my colleagues from Hanoi Moi Newspaper, where the first revolutionary journalists studied and trained. The “return to the source” trip helped us understand more about the mission of Party journalists, especially the opportunities and challenges of journalism in the context of the rapid development of artificial intelligence. From there, we became more aware of the role and responsibility of each journalist in the profession they have chosen.

Having worked for the Capital Party newspaper for 20 years, I have always felt honored and proud to be a reporter for Hanoi Moi Newspaper, working for a newspaper with a tradition of nearly 70 years. Hanoi Moi Newspaper, like many other press agencies, is facing many difficulties and challenges, but I always believe that when the "fire of the profession" still burns in each journalist, all difficulties and challenges can be overcome.

From “first sight” to aspiration on a new journey

I came to work at Hanoi Moi Newspaper right on the occasion of the newspaper's 50th anniversary (2007 - the 50th anniversary of the first daily issue of Hanoi Moi Newspaper). The atmosphere of excitement and joy towards a new milestone immediately spread to me, especially from the veteran journalists. At that time, I still couldn't remember all their names, but the friendly and professional journalists encouraged me to write the first article on this important occasion. I wrote it cautiously, sent it cautiously, and then just wanted to... ask for it back. However, not only the leaders of the department I worked for at that time, but also the leaders of other departments and many senior journalists read it and gave me their comments. Some edited the words, some edited the information to be accurate, some... gave me the title "Hanoi Moi at first sight", some arranged which pages and which days to publish the article. In particular, everyone smiled and encouraged: "Your writing style is brilliant, keep it up!". And I am confident, growing up from there.

The more I work here, the more precious and warm I feel, not only because of the newspaper's long tradition, but also because of the dedication, openness, and solidarity between generations of journalists in a harsh yet inspiring professional environment.

For nearly 18 years working at Hanoi Moi Newspaper, I have witnessed many changes and developments of the newspaper. From simple print and electronic publications to the continuous movement on digital platforms and social networks; producing impressive digital content such as E-Magazine, Longform, Podcast…; applying AI, Big Data, IoT to create new products… The newspaper has been gradually modernizing to reach readers faster, deeper, and more attractively. In each of these movements, there is consensus, creativity and constant efforts of the collective of Hanoi Moi Newspaper staff.

However, what makes Hanoi Moi today unique is not technology, but the style and soul of Hanoi - something that the newspaper has steadfastly preserved for decades. It is the dignity and standard in expression; the depth and sophistication in each sentence; the way Hanoians appear in each article - intelligent, elegant, humane. Hanoi Moi journalists write about Hanoi not only with words, but with feelings, with understanding from within. The articles do not stop at reporting news, but also connect tradition and modernity, between cultural depth and changing urban life.

That is why, now, being able to join Hanoi Moi Newspaper in marking the century of Vietnamese revolutionary journalism, I feel extremely proud. I am grateful to those who laid the foundation, those who passed on the profession and trained me, so that we can confidently enter the new era of modern journalism. In the context of fierce media competition and constantly changing technology, Hanoi Moi journalists see their responsibilities more clearly. We must constantly learn and innovate to keep up with the trends of modern journalism, but above all, we must still maintain the core of journalism - ethics, courage, aspiration, and wholehearted service; at the same time, bring a refined, elegant voice that is true to the character of Hanoians to convey valuable information quickly, attractively, and humanely to the public.

The greatest gift that journalism has given

On this occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, I am as moved as many other colleagues, remembering many memories from the days of taking the first steps in writing news and articles, to the days when I and my colleagues closely followed every major event of the country, from the City Party Congresses, to the National Party Congress, the exciting election days, to the heroic historical celebrations of the nation. It is also the memory of the times of reporting and writing articles "day and night" on the work of preventing and fighting the Covid-19 epidemic, or participating in propagating thorny issues that occurred in Dong Tam (My Duc), the "land claim" incidents related to Thai Ha Church, 40 Nha Chung; reporting on the flood in 2008... One of the most memorable memories was when I participated in the investigative series "The Elephant Crawling Through the Eye of a Needle" to expose the illegal construction on thousands of square meters of agricultural land that occurred in Nam Tu Liem district. The series of articles not only contributed to restoring justice to the law, but also brought our group of reporters the B prize of the 2009 National Press Award...

During 20 years of working for Hanoi Moi Newspaper, I have always felt a deep pride in being a part of the beloved common home at 44 Le Thai To, not only because of the very special location of the workplace - right next to Turtle Tower, the sacred Hoan Kiem Lake, but also because this is a press agency with a very glorious history that has been painstakingly built by generations of talented, dedicated and individualistic Hanoi Moi journalists.

Working for Hanoi Moi Newspaper also gives me the honor of being immersed in the vibrant heartbeat of the Capital - the heart of the whole country, especially when assigned to report on the activities of the Hanoi Party Committee, witnessing and recording important events and impressive developments of the Capital and the country over the past 20 decades. Each news line, each article published in the newspaper, to me, is first and foremost the product of my efforts to do my best at work, but at the same time, it conveys the passion and sense of responsibility of a journalist who always wishes to contribute to the development of the Capital and the country.

Looking back on the past, I not only see the important milestones of Hanoi and the country, but also see my own maturity in both my career and my life. Being able to contribute my small part to the flow of information, helping to shape public opinion and convey positive values, I believe that this is the greatest gift that journalism has given me.

The press in general and the Hanoi Moi Newspaper are facing the need to innovate and adapt quickly in a world where artificial intelligence is creating an extremely rapid breakthrough in science and technology. With a love for the profession and the courage to not retreat, which is brought by the experiences of journalism, I am always ready to innovate and adapt to continue to write with my comrades and colleagues the glorious history of the Heroic Party Newspaper of the Heroic Capital.

Journalism helps me grow up

After graduating from the Institute of Journalism and Communication (now the Academy of Journalism and Communication in Hanoi), at the end of 2005, I was fortunate to be accepted for a probationary period by Ha Tay Newspaper. That was the first turning point that brought me to journalism and became the career that I am attached to until today.

I was assigned to the Industry Department by Editor-in-Chief Kieu Ngoc Kim. “Joining this department will help you grow quickly,” he said. And it was true. At the Industry Department, I was enthusiastically guided and instructed by the Head of the Department To Thi Kim Dung, Deputy Head of the Department Doan Van Hop and other reporters, from how to go to the field to interview, collect information, etc. to completing an article. After 3 months of probation, I signed an official labor contract and gradually got used to, then loved, the job of a reporter - a job that is different every day, never boring.

In 2008, after Ha Tay Newspaper merged with Hanoi Moi Newspaper, the Agriculture - Rural Department was established on the basis of the Industry Department and the Economic Department of Ha Tay Newspaper (old). I was assigned to monitor the field of agriculture, rural areas, farmers, focusing on the construction of new rural areas. Since then, nearly 20 years, I have been attached to this field as a lasting fate.

With the close guidance of the Editorial Board, the Board's leaders and the supportive spirit of my colleagues, I gradually matured in my profession. The news, articles, series of articles, special pages and columns I wrote not only reflected the reality in a timely manner, but also contributed to orienting public opinion and providing useful information for the leadership and direction of the City's New Rural Development Program.

As reporters in the agricultural and rural sector, we often work far from the city center, sometimes wading through fields, braving the sun and rain with farmers, participating in reporting on flooded areas, storms, etc. But in return, I get to live among honest farmers who love their jobs, listen to honest and touching stories and learn countless good things from life in the countryside.

There are journalistic works that left a deep impression on me. In March 2011, I returned to Yen Xa village (Tan Trieu commune, Thanh Tri district) to write an article “A time of Yen Xa wooden clogs”. Some time later, when I returned here, I was moved to see my article enlarged, framed solemnly and hung in the “Yen Xa wooden clog exhibition space”. Villagers shared: “The article helps promote the traditional craft, and is also a passionate voice, expressing the desire to preserve the heritage of our ancestors”. For me, that is a priceless spiritual gift.

Every field trip, every interview with people, officials, experts, policy makers… is a time to broaden my vision, helping me to mature and commit to journalism.
