The match takes place on September 8, 2025, in game 5 of the tournament.

Holding the white pieces, Mishra took full advantage of Gukesh's mistake when the Indian player ventured a kingside pawn push. This bold move weakened the black king, forcing him out of his safe position, giving Mishra the opportunity to gain the upper hand.

Despite the tense final minutes, Mishra remained remarkably calm. Gukesh, however, despite his keen calculation, was not in his best form in the following moves. Despite holding out for 21 more moves, Gukesh was forced to concede on move 61, officially handing the 16-year-old prodigy his historic victory.

The win was the culmination of an impressive run of form for Mishra at the Grand Swiss. He had previously drawn against Nodirbek Yakubboev, defeated Alexey Sarana and Yu Yangyi, and most notably, held top seed Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa to a draw.

With this win, Mishra earned an additional 31.6 Elo points, rising to 6th place in the world U20 group.

Currently, with 4 points after 5 games, Mishra is only 0.5 points behind the leader Parham Maghsoodloo. He is full of hope to compete for a place in the Candidates 2026 - the tournament that will select the candidate to compete with Gukesh for the "Chess King" title.

Grand Swiss 2025, taking place from September 4 to 15 in Uzbekistan, brings together 115 of the world's strongest players. This is an important Swiss chess tournament.

Notably, Magnus Carlsen was absent due to his lack of interest in standard chess and the "Chess King" title. In addition, the tournament also did not have the participation of big names for various reasons such as Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, opening up opportunities for young talents like Mishra to shine.
