Mr. Tran The Cuong and the inspection team visited a number of kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools in areas that were severely flooded due to the circulation of storm Matmo (storm No. 11) to inspect and remind schools to properly implement instructions in proactively adjusting teaching plans, ensuring safety for students in situations of heavy rain and flooding.

At the same time, schools should check classrooms and trees on campus to avoid risks that may occur when there is heavy rain or strong wind, and be ready to welcome students back to school under normal weather conditions.

At schools such as Ly Thuong Kiet Primary School (Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam ward), Phan Huy Chu High School (Dong Da), Trung Hoa Kindergarten (Yen Hoa ward)... leaders of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training acknowledged the proactiveness and flexibility of schools in changing teaching and learning status and ensuring safety for students.

Department leaders also had online conversations with students during online classes this morning at some schools to encourage them.

In the case of a teacher's house at Phan Huy Chu High School - Dong Da being flooded, having a power outage, and unable to teach online, the department requested the school to proactively arrange support and have a solution to ensure that teaching is not interrupted.

The inspection team also had specific requests for each school to immediately handle arising problems such as flooding affecting property and teaching equipment in some schools.

Ensuring there is no risk to students returning to school after flooding

Regarding the impact of storm Matmo, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has issued three documents giving school principals the initiative to flexibly adjust teaching plans and implement specific tasks to respond to the impact of storms and rains.

On the morning of October 7, due to heavy rain all night, many streets in Hanoi were flooded again. Many schools notified students and parents before 7am about the temporary suspension of school and the switch to online learning. The proactiveness of the schools prevented parents from having to take their children to school in a situation of heavy rain and flooding.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang, Chairman of the Board of Marie Curie Hanoi Inter-level School, said that from the afternoon of October 6, the school had notified all students at all levels not to come to school on October 7, in which primary school students were given a day off, and middle school and high school students switched to online learning.

Mr. Khang said that the weather was very unusual, but based on the weather forecast, the school proactively adjusted its plan to ensure the safety of students. He also said that the school had carefully prepared for students returning to school after a break to avoid storms and rain to ensure that there were no risks to students.

At many other schools such as Chu Van An High School, Thanh Cong Middle School, Dong Thai Middle School (Tay Ho)... the principals also said that they had informed students and parents early on the morning of October 7.

Compared to the passive response to storm No. 10, which caused students and parents to struggle with floods and caused public outrage, the Hanoi education sector has learned from previous practical lessons in its response to storm No. 11. Many parents expressed satisfaction with this receptiveness.

However, there are also parents who believe that for first and second graders, 1-2 days off school due to storms and rains does not necessarily require switching to online teaching. Because there may be many forms of coordination between schools and families in managing students studying at home more effectively, not just a formality.
