The VAR decision caused great controversy and became "fuel" for Mourinho's usual strong reactions. |
After only two matches in charge of Benfica, Mourinho quickly caused a stir. When Benfica were held to a 1-1 draw by Rio Ave in the first round of the Portuguese National Championship on September 24, Mourinho was upset with referee Sergio Guelho: "We scored a legitimate goal. But if football is now defined as a goal being disallowed because a toe lightly touches the opponent, then I don't like this kind of football."
At the press conference afterwards, the "Special One" continued to target the VAR team: "The real protagonist is the person sitting in the football city (VAR room). The referee has no personality. When I saw him call VAR, I knew the goal would be cancelled."
These statements prompted APAF to file an official complaint with FPF, asking for Mourinho's conduct to be reviewed. Aware of this, Mourinho responded: "I have to adapt. The Portuguese Championship is new to me. I understand that personal insults damage human dignity, and I do not do that."
"If I cannot criticize the referee's work the way millions of people criticize my work, then it is not democracy. If talking about referees is banned, everything will be easier," he emphasized.
The draw against weak Rio Ave also raised questions about Mourinho's ability to return to lead Benfica. In the Portuguese league standings, Benfica ranked 3rd, 4 points behind the leader Porto.
