Flood peak in Dong Thap Muoi region, people's lives disrupted

On October 23, according to the Tay Ninh Province Hydrometeorological Station, the peak water level on rivers and canals in the province continued to rise due to the influence of high tides in early September of the lunar calendar, combined with local rainfall and water flowing from upstream.

This year, rising flood waters have greatly affected the lives and agricultural production of people in the Dong Thap Muoi region.

At the Vam Co Tay river measuring station (Moc Hoa commune), the water level reached 205mm, exceeding alarm level 3; Hong Ngu canal station (Tan Hung commune) recorded 297mm, exceeding alarm level 2. Professional agencies assessed that today (October 23) is the day of the highest flood peak in this year's flood season in the Dong Thap Muoi region.

Rising floodwaters have disrupted the lives of hundreds of households in the Dong Thap Muoi region (Tay Ninh province). Many roads are deeply inundated, making travel very difficult. Mr. Truong Van Doan (residing in Lang Sen hamlet, Vinh Chau commune) said that over the past 10 days, the floodwaters have risen so much that his house has been heavily inundated, forcing him to move his belongings up high. His children's schooling has also been affected.

Floods have also severely affected agricultural production in the Dong Thap Muoi region. According to initial statistics, nearly 252 hectares of rice were damaged in Tay Ninh province, of which about 230 hectares were completely lost; 22 hectares of fruit trees and 1.5 hectares of vegetables were affected, mainly concentrated in the communes of Khanh Hung, Vinh Thanh, Vinh Chau... In addition, more than 7,200 hectares of autumn-winter rice and 100 hectares of winter-spring rice are at risk of being inundated by floods.

Faced with the above situation, Vice Chairman of Tay Ninh Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Lam requested localities to absolutely not be subjective or negligent; to increase on-duty staff, closely monitor water level developments, and promptly deploy measures to protect the safety of key dykes and agricultural production areas.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Lam requested that communes in Dong Thap Muoi region maintain 24/24 duty, be ready to respond according to the "4 on-site" principle, and develop specific plans for each situation such as overflow, landslides or dike breaks. In case of exceeding the handling capacity, the province must be promptly reported to for support, ensuring the safety of people's lives and property.
