Building geographical indications for My Lung Ga Gay sticky rice products

As a Northern midland and mountainous province, Phu Tho has many quality agricultural specialties, associated with protected geographical names, such as: Certified trademarks of Phu Tho Tea, Tam Nong Red Mountain, Doan Hung Grapefruit; collective trademarks such as: Thanh Son sour meat, Duc My soybean paste, Chua Ta green tea, Da river fish; multi-spur chicken, Gia Thanh seedless persimmon... and Ga Gay My Lung sticky rice, Son Luong commune.

Ga Gay sticky rice is in the stage of grain filling.

From the geographical and climatic conditions typical of the Northern Midlands and Mountains, thanks to "heavenly time and favorable terrain", it has created favorable conditions for the production of specialty rice varieties, delicious and highly nutritious. Among them, it is necessary to mention an ancient rice variety originating from My Lung commune, Yen Lap district (old), now Son Luong commune (Son Luong commune was established from My Luong, My Lung, Luong Son communes). That is the Ga Gay My Lung sticky rice variety - a thousand-year-old specialty of the Muong ethnic group, associated with a legend that has been passed down by word of mouth by many people here from generation to generation.

In 2010, Ga Gay My Lung sticky rice was registered for intellectual property protection in the form of a collective trademark. After protection, the product has a higher economic value and initially affirmed its position in the market, favored by consumers. Ga Gay My Lung sticky rice has round, firm, plump, ivory-white rice grains. The surface of the rice grains is shiny, this is a thin layer of essential oil, so when cooked into rice, the grains do not stick together. Thanks to this layer of essential oil, the rice has a characteristic light aroma, the aroma lasts. Thanks to that, the economic efficiency of this rice variety is 2-3 times higher than other sticky rice varieties.

With a total cultivated area of ​​over 100 hectares, the average yield is 120 - 150 kg/sao, equivalent to about 4 tons/ha; the average selling price is from 50,000 - 55,000 VND/kg; the average revenue is 90 million VND/ha. People are assured of production, their lives have been improved. This is an agricultural product with high livelihood value, bringing stable and sustainable income in a locality where over 80% of the Muong ethnic people live.

My Lung Chicken Rice is recognized as a 4-star OCOP product in 2022.

In order to exploit and promote the advantages of quality, distinctive characteristics and product brand, and spread the reputation of the product to consumers nationwide, in 2022, the People's Committee of Phu Tho province (old) proposed the Ministry of Science and Technology to approve the implementation of a national project under the Intellectual Property Development Program until 2030 "Registering protection and management of geographical indications for My Lung Ga Gay Sticky Rice products of Phu Tho province".

Officials of the Economic Department of Son Luong commune visited and inspected the Ga Gay sticky rice field.

Comrade Chu Thi Bich Thuy - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology said: Registering for protection of the Geographical Indication "My Lung" for Ga Gay sticky rice products is necessary and very important, helping to produce according to strict processes and ensure quality when tracing the origin; increase value, competitiveness and create trust with consumers. Diversify types of tourism products, build a model of producing Ga Gay sticky rice into a community tourism product, combined with exploiting the potential and strengths of natural resources and cultural identity of the Muong ethnic group.

With the majority being Muong ethnic people, creating a stable livelihood and increasing income for local people is extremely necessary. Increasing the value of specialty products will contribute to promoting economic development and improving the lives of the people.

It can be seen that the implementation of the Project "Registering for protection and management of geographical indications for My Lung Ga crow sticky rice products of Phu Tho province" not only contributes to maximizing the value of local specialty agricultural products, creating products with high economic value, but also implements the policy of developing community ecotourism associated with preserving and exploiting the traditional and unique culture of the province.
