The difficult situation of Nguyen Ngoc Tam, currently residing in Quarter 9, Phuoc Hoi Ward, La Gi Town, a 12A2 student at Nguyen Hue High School, makes anyone who hears it choke up.
A series of unfortunate events happened to the boy since he was 3 years old.
When I was 3 years old, my father died in a traffic accident. Tam lived with his mother until he was 7 years old, when his mother sent him to his grandparents' house and left to get married. From that day on, I was almost an orphan. I lived on my grandparents' poor household registration book to get by.
When I was 8 years old, for reasons I don't know, I was sent to live with my grandparents. Even though they were poor, they took good care of me.
Then, an unexpected accident happened to me when a gasoline drum exploded, breaking both my legs and making my eyes blurry. I was taken to the emergency room in time, but my legs are still bent and quite weak.
I thought that the misfortunes that had befallen me were enough, but disaster still did not let me go. When Tam was 12 years old, her grandparents passed away one by one, leaving her alone in the midst of a difficult life.
After a period of being alone, his uncle took pity on him and took him home to raise him and continue his education. However, his uncle worked as a bricklayer and his aunt worked as a tailor with unstable incomes and had to raise two children, so the family was in difficulty. His uncle only helped with two meals a day, and Tam had to pay for her own tuition.
Tam often skipped breakfast. On the days of studying for the 12th grade exam, he had to study until noon. There were days when he was so hungry, his eyes were dizzy, but he still had to endure.
Understanding his situation, teachers and school are always willing to help by waiving his tuition fees. In addition to going to class, Tam takes advantage of many part-time jobs such as working at restaurants and refreshment stalls to earn money to buy school supplies, books, and gas for transportation.
Breakthrough through learning
Tam said that due to the consequences of an accident when he was young, it was difficult for him to survive by doing hard labor. The only way to change his life was through education. Therefore, he threw himself into studying whenever he could.
Thanks to that, Tam had quite high achievements in all 3 years of studying: 6 semesters he was the top student in the class and was an excellent student in all aspects, with an average score of 8.9 for 3 years. In the second semester of grade 11, he was the top student in the block with an average score of 9.1.
In the recent high school graduation exam, Tam achieved an average score of 8.76 points and 22.5 points for university admission. She was admitted to the E-commerce major at the University of Water Resources in Ho Chi Minh City.
Receiving the news that he had passed the university entrance exam, Tam said the joy had not yet dawned when two streams of tears rolled down her face. The question “where will I get the money to pay the tuition fees” kept ringing in her head.
Talking about Nguyen Ngoc Tam, the homeroom teacher of class 12 A2, Nguyen Thi Nhan, said: “Tam is in a very special situation. Her father passed away, her mother remarried far away, and she lives with her grandparents who have also passed away, so she is the only one registered in the household. She was taken in by her uncle.
I went to school and worked part-time to earn money to cover my living expenses. I was always an excellent student at school, the best student in my grade. Teachers at school always helped me with many financial contributions.
This year I go to university, the tuition is more, I don't know where I will get the money to pay for it. If I have to drop out of school, it will be a pity for me.
Ngoc Tam said: “I always tell myself that no matter how difficult it is, I must try my best to study until the end. Only then can I repay the protection and upbringing of my relatives and the help of many teachers over the years. I said I just hope to have a little money to pay the first tuition fee and will be determined to work part-time to save money to continue studying.”
