During his studies, Wei Dong was guided in his research by the famous Physics professor Xie Xi De, who was also the principal of Fudan University at that time.

In 1988, after graduating from university with honors, he wanted to continue his studies for a master's degree. To nurture his passion for nuclear physics, Wei Dong joined the CUSPEA program founded by Nobel Prize winner Professor Li Zhengdao, which aims to select young talents to study abroad in the United States.
