The phenomenon of some bad guys installing hidden cameras in hotel rooms to steal customers' private information has happened before and makes many people still feel nervous when renting a room.

Hotel owners are not "crazy" enough to install hidden cameras, but no one can guarantee that there won't be any bad guys playing tricks on you at the place you visit.

Mobile phones can be an extremely useful device to help you detect hidden cameras easily and quickly. You can apply effective ways to detect motels with hidden cameras.

Method 1: Using the naked eye

CNBC reported that Pieter Tjia, a Singapore-based technology services company OMG Solutions, used his eyes to search for hidden cameras in the most vulnerable locations such as desk alarm clocks, electrical outlets, and light bulbs.

The expert went from room to room looking and initially saw nothing unusual. After 20 minutes of searching, he found a camera embedded in a clock, because the clock was showing the wrong time.

Method 2: Using the phone

- Hear a buzzing sound when making a phone call: When entering a room, call someone. While calling, walk through locations suspected of having a camera. If the phone can make a buzzing sound, there may be a camera because when the phone is operating, it will encounter electromagnetic signals such as a camera, buzzing and buzzing sounds will appear.

- Turn on the phone's Flash to check: Hidden cameras installed in hotel rooms often have blue or red LED lights. When it's dark, they will flash. Therefore, when checking into a hotel, turn off all the lights in the room to make the room dark for observation.

Wherever there are signs of suspicion, look for it. You can close your eyes for a while and then open them and observe, at this time your eyes are more sensitive to strange light so it is easier to detect. Or you can turn on the phone's flashlight to shine a beam of light around the room, if there is another recording device, it will reflect the light of the flashlight.

- Open the phone camera to detect: Another way is to open the phone camera and also rotate the room in recording mode. If there is a hidden camera device in the room, it will reflect or show a bright spot on your phone.

- Check by opening the wifi network scanner on the phone: Hidden camera devices will also need wifi to get data. So turn on wifi scanning mode to see what wifi networks are there. If in addition to the hotel wifi network, there are other wifi networks with names that are strings of meaningless letters and numbers, it is likely that it comes from a hidden camera.

Because bad guys usually don't dare to name their wifi meaningfully. If you have any doubts, ask the hotel about the wifi networks around.

Method 3: Turn off the lights in the room and use a flashlight.

Fox News shared how tiktoker Marcus Hutchins instructed people to turn off the lights, then shine a flashlight directly at the suspected location. The camera lens will reflect blue when the flashlight is shined on it. If you look closely, you will see the shape of the lens inside the object.

If you don’t have a flashlight, you can use your phone’s flashlight. In addition, when the lights are off, you can also detect the infrared LEDs emitted by the cameras that record at night, with a purple light.

Above are effective ways to detect motels with hidden cameras. If you are not confident about the room you rent, apply this method immediately.
