Only 45% of students worldwide feel ready for life after graduation, according to the report Preparing Learners to Thrive in a Changing World, published by Cambridge University Press, UK.
The results of the survey, which surveyed 3,800 students and 3,000 teachers in 150 countries, show a clear gap between what teachers and students think.
More than two-thirds of teachers believe that students are well prepared for their future careers, while less than half of students agree. This gap is reflected in the way subject knowledge is viewed. While still essential for exams, subject knowledge is no longer seen as a decisive factor for long-term success. Instead, students place a higher value on leadership skills, self-management and entrepreneurial ability.
The survey also highlighted the challenges that technology presents. 88% of teachers said students’ attention spans were declining, while 60% cited a decline in social skills as a major negative. Two-thirds of students worry about being easily distracted by devices, and nearly 20% said self-management is the most difficult skill to master.
Education experts emphasize that instead of underestimating knowledge, it is necessary to combine a solid professional foundation with opportunities to practice soft skills.
