From choosing their favorite subjects to participating in clubs and experiential projects, students not only improve their health but also inspire their passion, build life skills and team spirit - a solid foundation for comprehensive maturity.
Teaching and learning by elective subject
After being admitted to grade 10 at Son Tra High School (Son Tra, Da Nang ), Thai My Anh not only registered for a group of elective subjects but also decided to choose one of the four Physical Education subjects. Depending on interests and abilities, grade 10 students can study soccer, volleyball, badminton or basketball.
Mr. Bui Minh Quang - Principal of the school said: "We encourage students to pursue a physical education subject throughout 3 years of high school, helping them master skills, even achieve high results. If they find it unsuitable, they can change their choice after a year of study. Allowing students to choose their own subjects not only improves the effectiveness of teaching hours, helps teachers guide techniques better, but also creates motivation and excitement for both teachers and students."
Choosing to study badminton, My Anh shared: “Previously, students with small physiques often worried about taking the high jump test. When the school allowed us to choose subjects that suited our interests, we felt the pressure was relieved, and Physical Education truly became a subject that helps us train our health in a fun and effective way.”
Many high schools in Da Nang, such as Son Tra High School, have organized for students to choose physical education subjects, suitable to their interests, abilities and the actual conditions of each school. Therefore, the organization of physical education classes is different from traditional classes, which are usually arranged by grade. According to Mr. Bui Minh Quang - Principal of Son Tra High School, this does not cause difficulties, because physical education is taught in the afternoon, so it does not disrupt the general school schedule.
Within the framework of the opening ceremony of the 13th Southeast Asian Student Sports Festival in 2024 in Da Nang, Duc Tri Primary and Secondary School (Hai Chau Ward) was honored to perform a Vovinam martial arts performance with the participation of 100 students.
Ms. Le Thi Nga - Principal of the school said: “We have introduced Vovinam into mass teaching for several years now. Sports clubs in the school are always maintained, and facilities for sports activities are constantly improved and supplemented. Every year, the school organizes the Phu Dong Sports Festival, both to promote the movement 'Healthy for work and study' and to serve as a playground for selecting, nurturing and training students, helping them participate in sports competitions at many levels”.

Improve facilities
Before the administrative boundary merger, Da Nang had about 70 schools with multi-purpose halls, more than 200 sports fields and nearly 70 hard swimming pools. Some schools also had gyms qualified to teach 5-6 different sports. Since the 2017-2018 school year, the city has strongly invested in facilities serving physical education and sports activities.
The size and type of training ground are adjusted to suit the area of each school: schools with limited area focus on investing in volleyball, soccer, and badminton fields; while schools with large areas invest in multi-purpose sports fields. Investment costs range from 200 million VND to 2.7 billion VND per field, including training equipment.
In order to promote and maintain the school sports movement, schools organize subjects suitable to the physical conditions and needs of students. At Phan Chau Trinh High School (Hai Chau Ward), strong subjects such as badminton, table tennis, swimming, volleyball and basketball are included in the curriculum. During the learning process, teachers often incorporate competition content, helping students improve their skills and techniques, while creating excitement and motivation during the training process.
Nearly 300 students from Ly Tu Trong Primary School (Hai Chau Ward) registered to join sports clubs organized after school hours. Among them, basketball, table tennis and chess clubs attracted the most students.
In addition to the team members who are trained to participate in the Phu Dong Sports Festival, the clubs also open for students to register according to their interests, to practice health and develop talents. The activities of the clubs are maintained in the form of socialization, with some subjects such as martial arts, chess, the school invites outside coaches to guide, ensuring the quality of training and creating excitement for the students.
Da Nang is implementing a long-term strategy to improve students' physical fitness and health right in the school environment. In preparation for the 2025 Summer Swimming Safety Classes, by early June, 96/154 primary and secondary schools had been funded to teach free swimming to students. At the end of the course, each student will receive a certificate when they can swim 25m and float in the water for at least 30 seconds. Students are also encouraged to participate in advanced swimming courses to practice their techniques, gain confidence and proactively respond to unexpected situations.
Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuan - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang emphasized: "Sports activities in schools are the foundation to improve the physical fitness of students - the age of development. Therefore, the training grounds at schools are fully invested, ensuring to meet the practical needs of students".
Every year, Da Nang maintains many sports activities in schools, attracting a large number of students to participate and creating a balance between grassroots sports and high achievements. Thanks to that, the quality of Physical Education is significantly improved, at the same time, the Department of Education and Training can select excellent students to represent the whole city to participate in national sports competitions, with many impressive achievements.
