5 people poisoned after eating nearly 1 kg of fried stink bugs

Hanoi About three hours after eating fried stink bugs, five men vomited, had diarrhea, and had body aches, two of whom had severe respiratory failure.

All 5 people were taken to Ninh Binh General Hospital for emergency treatment, then two severe cases were transferred to the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi).

On July 9, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Director of the Poison Control Center, said that both patients (38 and 39 years old) were diagnosed with poisoning from eating stink bugs and showed signs of respiratory muscle paralysis, rhabdomyolysis, and severe muscle damage. Both were given detoxifying drugs and put on ventilators, and fortunately recovered after a week of treatment.

A patient said he caught a bag of stink bugs on a lychee tree, about 0.7 kg in total, and roasted them for 5 people to eat. Because the bugs were so small, he could not count how many he ate.

The remaining stink bugs after eating were brought to the hospital along with the poisoned person so that doctors could identify the toxin and provide appropriate treatment. Currently, this stink bug sample has been sent to the Institute of Ecology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, to determine the exact scientific name of the poisonous insect.

According to Dr. Nguyen, the center has received emergency cases of poisoning due to eating this type of stink bug. In 2021, 6 people in a family in Hoa Binh were poisoned after eating about 0.5 kg of fried stink bugs. One of them was in a coma, excited, had metabolic acidosis (high blood acidity), and multiple organ failure.

There are many stink bugs, many of which are poisonous. The non-poisonous species have a very high risk of carrying pathogens and transmitting diseases to humans such as parasites, bacteria, and viruses.

In fact, it is very difficult to distinguish between poisonous and non-poisonous insects. Therefore, when a patient is poisoned, doctors have difficulty in diagnosing and treating them. To prevent this, strange creatures should not be used as food, no matter how they are prepared.
