In the first 5 months of 2023, Vietnam spent nearly half a billion USD importing meat and meat products.

In the first 11 months of 2022, Vietnam spent 1.35 billion VND importing meat and meat products. Imported chicken accounts for over 20% of consumption output.

The Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) cited data from the General Department of Customs, saying that in May 2023, Vietnam imported 57,620 tons of meat and meat products, worth 108.8 million USD, up 9.5% in volume, but down 10.2% in value compared to May 2022.

This is the fourth consecutive month that the amount of imported meat and meat products has increased compared to the same period in 2022.

In the first 5 months of 2023, Vietnam spent nearly half a billion USD importing meat.

In the first 5 months of 2023, Vietnam imported 239,130 tons of meat and meat products, worth 480.32 million USD, up 1.6% in volume, but down 9.1% in value over the same period in 2022.

In May 2023, Vietnam imported meat and meat products from 36 markets around the world . Of which, the United States, India, Russia, Brazil and Poland are the five largest markets supplying meat and meat products to Vietnam.

In May 2023, Vietnam will boost imports of meat and meat products from a number of markets such as the United States, Russia, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Slovakia, Italy, etc.

However, imports of meat and meat products from some markets decreased such as: Brazil, South Korea, Germany, Canada, Australia...

Notably, meat imports from Russia continued to increase sharply after a decline in 2022.

The main types of imported meat and meat products in May 2023 include: Meat and edible by-products of poultry; Fresh frozen buffalo meat; Edible by-products of live pigs, buffaloes, and cows, chilled or frozen; Fresh chilled or frozen pork; Fresh chilled or frozen beef...

Of which, imports of live, chilled or frozen poultry meat and edible by-products after slaughter (of pigs, buffaloes, and cows) tend to increase; while imports of pork and beef decrease compared to the same period in 2022.

Regarding pork products alone, in the first 5 months of 2023, Vietnam imported 29,610 tons of fresh chilled or frozen pork, worth 73.62 million USD, down 19.9% in volume and 5.7% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

Russia, Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada are the five largest markets supplying tons of fresh chilled or frozen pork to Vietnam.

Except for Russia, the amount of pork imported from these markets all decreased compared to the same period in 2022.

In the first 5 months of 2023, the market structure supplying pork to Vietnam changed, as the proportion of imports from Russia and Germany increased; while the proportion of imports from Brazil, Canada and the Netherlands decreased.
