People with cold constitution (prone to colds) or weak bodies; people with diabetes or kidney failure should be careful when using cool drinks.
Cool water is the general name for soft drinks made from traditional Vietnamese herbs such as corn silk, chrysanthemum, wolfberry, and plantain. In the summer, many families buy ingredients to make cool water to drink to quench their thirst and cool down. Doctor Huynh Tan Vu, Faculty of Traditional Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the ingredients to make cool water are very diverse, easy to find and have many uses besides cooling down, as follows:
Seaweed
Seaweed has high nutritional content, contains many minerals, especially calcium, iodine, low cholesterol. In addition, seaweed also contains fertile clement, good for pregnant women and children.
According to traditional medicine, seaweed is black or green, salty, slightly sweet, cool, and nourishes the kidneys. Seaweed water is suitable for people who are weak, have poor digestion, internal heat, and acne.
Grass roots
According to Oriental medicine, cogon root is white or pale yellow, sweet, cold, helps to clear heat, diuretic, clear lung heat (cools the chest area, good for people with cough and burning chest). However, thin, exhausted people should limit use because this is a diuretic drink, if you drink too much it can easily cause dehydration.
Sugarcane
Sugarcane has a small, thinner stem than other types of sugarcane. It is sweet and neutral in nature. It has the effect of clearing heat, supporting the spleen, strengthening the stomach (helping to eat well), benefiting the large and small intestines (making urination and defecation easier), cooling, reducing cough, reducing heat, detoxifying alcohol, and relieving the heat of drugs.
In particular, reed has a diuretic effect (cools by creating more body fluids) so it does not cause dehydration despite its diuretic properties and can be used long-term.
Corn silk (corn silk)
According to traditional medicine, corn silk has a sweet taste, neutral properties, diuretic properties, reduces edema, promotes bile secretion, clears heat in the blood (reduces irritability, restlessness, acne), and stops bleeding. For obese people, corn silk increases uric acid and blood cholesterol, making it a very healthy daily drink.
Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemum (Chinese medicine name is chrysanthemum) has a sweet and bitter taste, slightly cold properties, the effect of relieving colds, reducing fever, reducing inflammation, detoxifying (reducing swelling of pimples), and brightening the eyes. Therefore, chrysanthemum is especially necessary for people with blurred vision, dry eyes, or easily irritated eyes, red eyes, hot eyes when closed; people with high blood pressure, sore eyes, sore temples, heavy head, difficulty sleeping, waking up in the middle of the night.
However, people with indigestion, stomach upset, indigestion, diarrhea, limp limbs, and weakness should not use it.
Plantago
Plantago is cool, sweet, has diuretic and heat-clearing effects, is used as a diuretic, treats chronic cough, tonsillitis, cystitis, red eye, diuretic and detoxifying effects. Plantago is an additive to cool drinks, should not be used for thin people and people with indigestion and cold stomach.
Squash
Winter melon has a cooling effect, prevents heatstroke, dry mouth, acne, measles. In addition, this fruit also has a weight loss effect, very good for people with atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, edema due to nephritis. However, people absolutely do not use raw winter melon or raw winter melon juice because it will cause digestive disorders.
Bitter melon
This fruit has the effect of clearing heat, detoxifying, reducing inflammation, preventing heatstroke, brightening eyes, especially when suffering from dysentery due to heat. In addition, in hot weather, people who sweat easily or have prickly heat, itching, boiling bitter melon water to bathe once a day will significantly reduce itching.

Dr. Vu said that cool water is generally quite safe because it is made from plants. All types of cool water have the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying, used when the body is hot, feels stuffy, thirsty, has a dry throat and mouth, urinates little, has boils on the skin, mouth and tongue ulcers. However, people should not drink too much cool water after evening, because this drink can cause frequent urination at night.
In addition, people with cold constitution (prone to cold, susceptible to flu) or those with weak body should be careful when using cold water. Cold water has diuretic effect, if used for a long time instead of drinking water, it can cause electrolyte imbalance, poor absorption of some minerals such as calcium, potassium. When the body is suffering from acute and chronic diseases, patients need to be prescribed and instructed to use cold water properly.
Diabetics cannot use the formula containing reed. People with chronic kidney failure need to carefully calculate the amount of water they take in, including regular drinking water. When using cool water from medicinal herbs containing ions and micronutrients in uncontrolled amounts, kidney failure can worsen.
Healthy people should not use cold water continuously every day and regularly, but should only use it for a short time and change the cooking ingredients regularly.
When choosing ingredients to cook the broth, you should choose fresh, unbruised ingredients or dry ingredients that are not moldy or have been left for too long, leading to deterioration.
