Recently, this pair of twin brothers brought home 2 Gold Medals from the 2nd Turkmenistan Mathematical Olympiad, held in the capital Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Previously, both brothers won first prize in the National Mathematics Competition for Excellent Students in the 2024-2025 school year and participated in the selection round for the 2025 International Mathematics Olympiad team.

Hien and Hau lived with their mother in a bungalow in Tam Thanh commune, Phu Ninh district. When they were young, they lived with their aunt (mother's older sister) because their mother had to teach far away.

Although growing up in the countryside, the family's economy only depended on their mother's salary as a primary school teacher, the two children always studied independently and were excellent students for many years. They were especially passionate about Math.

In grade 9, both won first prize in the provincial math competition, then passed the entrance exam to the specialized math class of Nguyen Binh Khiem High School for the Gifted.

The house is about 12 km from school. The two brothers live in a dormitory and go home by themselves every weekend.

Nguyen Tri Hien and Nguyen Tri Hau are members of the Vietnamese delegation to the 2025 Turkmenistan Mathematical Olympiad .

Mr. Phan Van Chuong, Principal of Nguyen Binh Khiem High School for the Gifted, commented that the two brothers are very quiet, honest, have a strong will to improve and a high spirit of learning. “Both of them are good students and especially have a very high ability to self-study. Coming from a rural area with difficult initial learning conditions, the two of them have made efforts to self-study and demonstrated their intelligence and outstanding abilities right from their junior high school years. At high school level, they also made great efforts and revealed their outstanding abilities. They always show passion, desire to acquire knowledge and have a firm grasp of knowledge,” said Mr. Chuong.

Mr. Chuong said that these twin brothers are not only good students but also have many similar achievements in Math.

Specifically, in grade 9, both won first prize in the provincial math competition. In grade 10, they both took the provincial math competition, originally for grade 12, where Hien won first prize and second prize. That same year, both were selected to "jump up a level" to take part in the national math competition and both won the Encouragement Prize.

This year in grade 11, the two brothers continued to win first prize in the provincial math competition, then first prize nationally (out of 16 national first prizes) before participating in the selection round for the International Math Olympiad. In this round, Hau ranked 7th, Hien ranked 9th, and both lacked a bit of luck to enter the 2025 International Math Olympiad team. However, with this result, the two were selected for the team to compete in the Math Olympiad organized by Turkmenistan and excellently won 2 Gold Medals.

“What I am very happy about is that the students are trying their best. Although they lacked a bit of luck to be included in the international Olympic team this year, participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad is also a condition for them to continue to practice, compete, and learn to improve their level, creating a stepping stone to reap success in international playgrounds in the future. Opportunities still open up in grade 12 and I completely believe in the inner strength of the two students,” said Mr. Chuong.
