Apple wins big in the personal computer market

Apple's sales in the second quarter of 2024 increased 20.8% year-on-year, the largest increase among global PC makers.

A report by research firm IDC shows that global PC shipments increased 3% in the second quarter of 2024 compared to a year earlier, with Apple and Acer recording the largest growth among PC makers at 20.8% and 13.7%, respectively.

Global PC shipments reached 64.9 million units in the three months ended June 2024, marking the second consecutive quarter of growth after two years of decline.

Two consecutive quarters of growth, the hype around AI-integrated PCs, and a new business cycle seem to be what the PC market needs, said Ryan Reith, vice president of IDC's Worldwide Device Trackers division.

The PC market has been in a historic slump for the past few years after consumers, businesses, and schools made new purchases in 2020 and 2021 and then paused their purchases. Analyst Amit Daryanani at Evercore ISI believes a new buying cycle is underway.

Computer makers are aggressively promoting AI PCs, devices designed to run artificial intelligence (AI) tasks, to customers. IDC said only about 3% of PCs shipped this year were optimized for AI.

In Q2/2024, Dell Technologies was the only major name to see a decline in sales, down 2.4%. China's Lenovo led the market with nearly 23% market share. HP recorded a growth of 1.8% and came in second, followed by Lenovo with 21% market share.

Weak demand in China held back the overall market performance. Excluding mainland figures, worldwide PC sales rose more than 5% last quarter compared with the same period last year.
