Australia said on August 27 it will cap the number of international students it can enroll at 270,000 by 2025, as the government seeks to rein in record immigration that is contributing to rising rents.

The decision follows a series of moves since 2023 to end preferential treatment for foreign students and workers in Australia during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to SBS News, the cap will allow 145,000 places for public universities, 95,000 places for foreign students in vocational education and training (VET) and 30,000 places at universities and other training institutions.

“Currently, the number of international students studying at universities is about 10% higher than before the pandemic, while the rate at private training and vocational training establishments is about 50% higher,” Australian Education Minister Jason Clare said at a press conference.

Education is one of Australia's biggest foreign exchange earners, bringing in $24.7 billion to the economy in the 2022-2023 financial year. However, polls show voters are concerned that the influx of foreign students and workers will put undue pressure on the housing market, making immigration one of the major contentious issues between candidates in the election that is less than a year away.
