Sputnik news agency quoted Polish Defense Minister Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh as saying on July 31 that the 18th Mechanized Division, a new military unit of the 1st Army Corps Infantry Division, will be deployed in the town of Karakule, outside the city of Bialystok on the country's northeastern border.
The force will provide military support to the border guards protecting the Polish-Belarusian border.
According to Mr. Kosinyak-Kamysh, the situation on the border between Poland and Belarus has been getting worse recently, “the last few months have been the most difficult” and “May was the month when attacks on the Polish border did not stop.”
"That is why we are placing the division in Bialystok, so that the border defense security will be even more stable, because we will deploy the latest equipment here, including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armed long-range guns, rocket launchers," the Polish official said.
At the same time, on August 1, Poland also began an operation codenamed “Aerial Dawn” to strengthen air defenses on its eastern borders. The main target will be “illegal border violations, including at very low and high altitudes, which are typical of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles.”
In mid-2021, thousands of migrants poured into the Polish-Belarusian border hoping to reach European Union (EU) countries. Since then, hundreds of illegal immigrants have been trying to cross the border into Poland every month.
Polish authorities have tightened border security, deployed troops and cracked down on illegal immigration attempts, blaming Belarus for the migration crisis.
