Baidu CEO Robin Li said the company is waiting for government approval before launching Ernie Bot like ChatGPT. “For important and sensitive topics, we have to make sure that artificial intelligence will not cause hallucinations,” Li said, referring to the “hallucination” phenomenon caused by AI models.

“Since LLM (large language model) is more or less a probabilistic model, this task is not easy at all,” he added, referring to the model used by many AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT and Ernie Bot.
Li said industry regulation is not yet final and the company will continue to update its strategy as it evolves. “Baidu has been operating search operations in China for more than 20 years and has extensive experience with China’s culture and regulatory environment,” he said.
China's cyberspace regulator last month released draft measures to regulate services powered by general AI, like Ernie Bot, saying content generated by the pioneering technology must be in line with the country's core values.
Li said these measures would benefit Baidu. “We believe that early-stage active participation by regulators in general AI will raise the bar for entry, and we are well-positioned for that,” he said.
