Sued for discriminating against African American employees

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên09/11/2024

The Hill newspaper reported on November 8 that the US Department of Justice has sued the Mississippi State Senate for discriminating against a former African-American employee, paying him much lower wages than white employees.

The lawsuit alleges that the Mississippi State Senate violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964. When hired in 2011, Kristie Metcalfe was the first African American staffer in the Mississippi State Senate in 34 years. However, she was paid a starting salary of $55,000 a year, much less than her white colleagues, even though she did the same job.

Another employee with no experience hired for the same position started at $101,500 a year. In January 2012, Kristie Metcalfe’s colleagues received raises, but she did not. She appealed but was dismissed and quit shortly thereafter.

The US Department of Justice is suing the Mississippi State Senate to pay Kristie Metcalfe her salary, along with damages and other reparations.
