- According to her personal page, Y Phung is very happy in a foreign land with all the happy pictures with her colleagues and children. How do you feel when talking about your life and career at this time?
It seems so but it is not true, I am happy with my child for a few hours but then I miss my job so much. My life has been tied to my ancestors' profession since I was in my mother's womb. I will not quit my job, I will sing as a thank you to the audience who have nurtured my voice as well as given my family food and clothes.
As long as the audience still loves me, there is no reason for me to leave my acting career. I have projects to prepare for my own YouTube page. When everything is ready, I will officially introduce them to the audience.
Actress Y Phung.
- When she came to America, Y Phung switched to singing bolero music, but to many audiences, the deep impression she left was that she was a sexy actress and a singer of vibrant dance music in Vietnam. What are your memories of 20 years ago?
When I was still in my hometown, because I loved Madonna's style, I copied everything from her performance style to her clothes. At that time, Madonna tied her hair up high, wore a conical-shaped corset designed by fashion wizard Jean Paul Gaultier for the song Like a Virgin in a show, and sang with a dance group on a bed in the middle of the stage.
I found it beautiful and interesting so I suggested it to the stage director Huu Tri, who was also a choreographer at that time. Being a close friend, he agreed and I immediately had a bed on stage in Hanoi , 2 dancers and a 'roof-shattering' musical piece.
Three days after singing at the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Cultural Palace, the audience was so excited about the performance of Y Phung lying sexy on the bed with 2 male actors that they bought a lot of tickets to the theater. At that time, the performance was considered offensive. I was banned from singing for 1 week and was only allowed to sing again in Hanoi on the condition that I did not use a bed and did not crawl or roll on the stage.
But many people don't know, after a lively song, I sang a bolero song. I still remember the name of the next song is Tinh bo vo . A part of me is cai luong, bolero is folk music, very close to cai luong. After the night of singing, on the way home, in the car, I also played cassette tapes of old cai luong plays by my father and his colleagues that I often listened to and knew by heart.
- When you were young and just starting to sing, and also in those first days on stage overseas when you had a new life, how was Y Phung at these two times?
After settling down for 6 months, I met musician Truc Ho again. He introduced me to the owner of a music center to continue my career, so I didn't have any difficulty settling down in a foreign country.
The career of an artist in a foreign country is not an easy thing. Overseas, the stage is not lit up every night like in Vietnam, if you want to sing, you have to wait until the weekend and there are only 2 music centers that are welcomed by the audience.
The hardest thing for artists living overseas is that there are not as many show producers as in Vietnam. If artists want to sing a lot and stay in the profession for a long time, their homeland is still the place that creates the most space for them to live.
Y Phung now.
- Among the overseas artists, who do you love?
I used to have some close friends in the industry but I got so much backlash that I am now shy. Currently, I am not close to anyone in the industry in Vietnam or overseas.
We simply have similar personalities and invite each other out for coffee, then we each pay, go home, and take care of our own business, without listening to each other's concerns. We have fun chatting when we buy a nice wallet or shirt. I prefer that to being friends more than being best friends.
- Having been pursued by many people and also experienced a breakup, what are your views and opinions on men?
I like rich men, not rich like millionaires or billionaires, but at least they must be good at making money. I like to live in a nice house, dress up and drive a nice car. I have always admired good men who know how to make money and do not let women lack material things when they are with them. That is the difference between men and women.
- Why does Y Phung rarely share about her husband? In married life, conflicts are inevitable. What do you regret most?
Because my husband is not in showbiz, there is no reason to share. And I also want to have my own world .
- Living in the US, your daughter is now 5 years old. How do you raise her?
Paris loves to sing and takes pictures. My daughter is gentle, cries easily and is emotional. When she sees me sick and having a headache, she hugs her mother and cries. In her two years of kindergarten, she received a certificate of merit for helping her classmates. When she goes out, she sees some old ladies in wheelchairs and runs to help hold their bicycles. I recorded a video as a souvenir, to show her when she grows up.

- Known as "Calendar Queen", "Sexy Icon", but after giving birth, you admitted to having a crisis because your beauty had seriously declined. How did you overcome that time?
No way, too much stress is one of the reasons why I gained weight. But now, I am trying to put it all aside because thinking too much will harm myself. The doctor warned that if I do not let go of negative thoughts, it can lead to dangerous diseases. I am trying to find myself again.
- Recently, many overseas artists have returned to the country to work quite extensively. Y Phung is associated with the two words "rebellion" and full of adventure. If there is an invitation to return to the country to participate in artistic activities, will you consider returning and balancing with your family life, which is currently stable?
I have received many invitations from organizers and filmmakers in Vietnam and overseas, but I am too fat and ugly. I cannot allow myself to be ugly when I return to the profession, so I ask for permission at another time. When I get back in shape, I will return to the profession. As I said from the beginning, I will follow this profession for the rest of my life.
