Accompanying women

The Committee for the Advancement of Women in Can Tho City recently held a meeting to celebrate Vietnamese Women’s Day (October 20), with the theme “Health, beauty and career of modern women”, with more than 180 delegates attending. The event not only honored the beauty and bravery of women but also demonstrated the city’s concern in creating an environment for women to develop comprehensively.

Ms. Dao Thi Loan Anh, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Thuan Dong Commune, shared: "The meeting helped me gain more knowledge about health care and disease prevention; at the same time, learn how to balance work and family to live a more meaningful and positive life." According to her, the secret to "being well-rounded" is knowing how to balance, maintain health and constantly learn to improve every day.

Over the years, the work of gender equality and women's advancement has always been directed and implemented synchronously by sectors, levels, agencies and units in Can Tho City. The city considers this a regular task, associated with the goal of sustainable development. Programs to support women in starting a business, vocational training, health care and improving qualifications have been widely implemented, bringing about many positive changes. Mr. Bui Hoang Liem, Deputy Director of the Department of Home Affairs of Can Tho City, said: "Gender equality is a prerequisite for a democratic, civilized and sustainably developed society".

Mr. Liem added that in recent times, the city has issued and implemented many major policies, such as: national strategy on gender equality, program on prevention and response to gender-based violence, communication on gender equality until 2030... In particular, after the state management function on gender equality was transferred from the Department of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs to the Department of Home Affairs, the Home Affairs sector has proactively coordinated with relevant departments and branches to advise the City People's Committee to develop specific targets and goals, aiming at the goal of substantive equality between men and women in terms of status, opportunities and rights...

At the grassroots level, many practical models have been effectively maintained. Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Diem, President of the Women's Union of Vi Tan Ward, said: "The Women's Law Club of the ward is very active. Thereby, providing legal advice to hundreds of women, contributing to building happy families and maintaining security and order in the area." The Association also coordinated the implementation of Project 938 "Propaganda, mobilizing, and supporting women to participate in solving social issues", maintaining the model of "Prevention of domestic violence", "Safety for women and children", supporting 100% of victims of violence to access at least one social service, with special attention to safety in cyberspace.

Affirming self-worth

Currently, Can Tho City has over 67,230 cadres, civil servants and public employees. Of these, there are 36,645 female cadres, civil servants and public employees, accounting for 54.5%; there are 80 female cadres, civil servants and public employees in key leadership and management positions at the department and commune levels, accounting for 16.39%; there are over 2,670 female cadres, civil servants and public employees with doctoral, master's and equivalent degrees, accounting for 39.5%.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, Member of the City Party Committee, Vice Chairwoman of the Can Tho City People's Committee, said: "In recent times, the city has always paid attention to the planning and appointment of female cadres. This is specifically demonstrated by the increasing proportion of women holding leadership and management positions at all levels. Many women have affirmed their capacity in management, actively contributing to the city's innovation process."

If the attention of Party committees and authorities at all levels is the foundation, the will and efforts of each woman are the decisive factors. Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam Chan, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Chau Thanh Commune, Chairwoman of the Commune Women's Union, expressed: "Being given favorable conditions in a favorable working environment and professional training, I have more motivation to strive."

Gender equality is one of the issues that society is most concerned about today. Ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women in all fields is not only a legal requirement under the Law on Gender Equality, but also a prerequisite for a democratic, civilized and sustainably developed society. The city considers this a regular task and implements many activities to promote gender equality. From there, gender equality is not just a slogan but a core value, the foundation for the sustainable development of the city, where everyone has the opportunity to develop their full potential and contribute to society.

In the 2021-2025 period, Can Tho City organized 12 training courses to improve capacity for about 2,200 people working on gender equality at the grassroots level; equipping them with skills to integrate gender into policies, communications and prevention of domestic violence. In addition, the city organized 62 seminars, talks and forums with the participation of 1,600 officials, members and people, focusing on the prevention of violence, early marriage, child abuse and building happy families.
