Bloomberg's Allegations and Crypto.com's Rebuttal

According to a Bloomberg report published on September 21, the Scattered Spider hacker group successfully penetrated Crypto.com's system in a "previously unreported" incident.

The news agency said that hackers used sophisticated social engineering techniques, impersonating employees to defraud and access users' sensitive personal data.

Bloomberg also emphasized that this attack is just part of a larger campaign by Scattered Spider, targeting more than 200 companies worldwide , including big names in the telecommunications, gaming and retail industries.

Immediately, Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek took to social media X to react.

He called Bloomberg's claims "misleading" and coming from "ignorant sources." Marszalek clarified that the company detected a phishing campaign targeting an employee in 2023, but the incident was contained and resolved within hours.

“Any allegations that we failed to report or disclose the security incident are completely unfounded. The incident was contained, no customer funds were accessed or put at risk, and only a very limited portion of user personal information was impacted,” he said.

Crypto.com representatives also added that their systems are audited, continuously improved, and the company prides itself on its security culture and the number of industry-leading security certifications it holds.

Scattered Spider: The "ghosts" of Gen Z

Scattered Spider (also known by aliases UNC3944, Octo Tempest) is a cybercriminal organization consisting of young hackers.

They don't use sophisticated malware, but are masters of social engineering: phishing, smishing, identity theft, and bypassing even the most sophisticated multi-factor authentication systems.

They target large corporations to steal data, blackmail or demand ransom.

One of the key members arrested was Noah Michael Urban (20 years old), this hacker was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the US for using techniques such as SIM swapping to hijack accounts, steal cryptocurrencies and cause estimated damages from 9.5 to 25 million USD.

Recently, two British teenagers (under 20 years old) were also arrested for allegedly being involved in more than 120 international attacks, extorting hundreds of millions of dollars in ransom.

While Crypto.com asserts the safety of its platform, the Bloomberg report once again shows that the cryptocurrency industry remains a top target for sophisticated cybercriminal groups and the fight to protect digital assets is never-ending.
