Ministry of Health warns of disease risk from heavy rain and floods after storm No. 10

The Ministry of Health recommends that medical facilities note that responding to epidemics after storms does not stop at timely treatment, but prevention is the key task in protecting public health.

Faced with the complicated developments of storm No. 10 (storm Bualoi) causing prolonged heavy rain in many northern and North Central provinces, the Ministry of Health has just issued an urgent dispatch requesting affected localities and affiliated units to quickly deploy response measures, overcome the consequences, and ensure people's health and safety.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from September 29 to the morning of September 30, many places recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall: My Luong (Phu Tho) 346 mm, Viet Hong ( Lao Cai ) 336.4 mm, Thanh Hung (Thanh Hoa) 303 mm, My Yen (Thai Nguyen) 321.8 mm. It is forecasted that in the coming hours, the provinces of Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, and Lao Cai will continue to have very heavy rain, with a high risk of flash floods and landslides.

The Ministry of Health has just requested the Health Departments of provinces from Hue City to Dien Bien to urgently deploy response measures after Storm No. 10. Accordingly, hospitals and medical centers must be ready to receive, provide emergency aid and treat storm and flood victims; at the same time, fully stock up on medicine, supplies, equipment and spare hospital beds.

Medical examination and treatment must be maintained continuously, especially in intensive care units, areas using ventilators and essential equipment, with plans to prepare electricity, water and means of transport.

The local health sector must coordinate with the government to handle the environment, disinfect, provide clean water; strengthen monitoring, detect and promptly handle infectious disease cases to prevent the risk of epidemic outbreaks after the storm.

Central health units located in the North and Central regions are also tasked with being ready to provide professional support, receive seriously ill patients from lower levels, and deploy mobile forces to prevent epidemics, monitor epidemics and support vaccination when necessary.

The Departments of Health and affiliated units must urgently report the situation and support needs to the Ministry of Health for synthesis and submission to competent authorities for timely consideration and handling.
